ABOUT THE CLASS
Do you have a teenager who loves photography, but not getting what they need at their high school to improve their work and have a better understanding of the medium? Are you looking for your teen to develop their portfolio and get a head start even before college? Would your young shutterbug love to take a fun and challenging photography course this summer?
It can be really difficult for kids who are serious about photography to find the appropriate level of instruction, to get critique of their work, and to really gain momentum with their photography before college. Most high school photography programs, if they even exist, just don’t offer the kind of photography education that some teenagers crave. Young photographers also need the chance to create community and a friend group with kids who are equally passionate about photography. What these kids need is a deep dive, a more sophisticated experience that will offer them instruction, critique of work, and the opportunity to meet like-minded young photographers.
Acclaimed photographer and youth photo instructor Thomas Holton’s fun, assignment-based Teen Photo Camp is the perfect solution. In this hybrid online/outdoor course, students will identify their subjects of interest, receive feedback on their work, learn new technical skills, explore the history of photography and how it functions in the world today, and express their ideas and emotions with photographs.
This course will give your teen a serious advantage when it comes to pursuing photography in college and beyond.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Monday through Friday, students will attend an online 2-hour session in the morning and another 2-hour session in the afternoon.
The sessions will heavily emphasize individual feedback on students’ photographs. Participating teens will have lots of opportunities to get their work critiqued so they can push it to the next level.
Online sessions will also include basic camera and Lightroom tutorials, as well as slideshows on photography’s history and current status in the world, which will help your teen identify how they can fit into that history.
We know it is important for young people to get away from the screens, so class days will also be filled with challenging and fun outdoor shooting assignments.
Students are welcome to use dedicated cameras or their smartphones in this course.
