ABOUT OUR CRITIQUE GROUPS

PhotoPhlo’s online critique groups provide an instructor-led platform for open discussions about each student’s work. Most of our critique groups cater to photographers with diverse practices and ideas, while some focus on specific genres. Though each instructor brings a unique methodology, all foster an environment of constructive feedback. Additionally, some instructors augment the critique with occasional slideshows and exercises designed to deepen understanding and critical thinking about photography.

Enrollment in our critique groups is ongoing and open whenever space is available. Certain groups require an application for admission. Upon enrollment, you will receive instructions on how to prepare for class, including a Zoom link and guidelines for sharing your work with the group.

Critique Group Levels

Introductory

Introductory groups are meant for photography enthusiasts who have little to no critique experience. These groups will not only help you create better photos but will also increase your understanding of how photographs can come together as a body of work. Some instructors may include brief slideshows and exercises to guide students in looking at and talking about photographs. If you are new to the critique format, being part of an Introductory group before joining an Intermediate class will optimize your experience, empowering you to move forward with confidence and intention.

INTERMEDIATE

Intermediate critiques are designed for photographers who have some experience in a critique environment and have completed one or more portfolios of work. These critiques are great for serious photographers who will benefit from the structure and feedback a critique offers, whether they are creating new work or developing a body of work already underway. Participants should have reasonable confidence and proficiency in camera and post-production techniques, as well as in discussing photos. They should also have an understanding of how photographs can work together in a defined project.

ADVANCED

Advanced critiques are meant for experienced photographers who have an ongoing creative practice, have completed several portfolios of work, and have previously participated in critique groups. Photographers in advanced critique groups should be thinking about their work conceptually, and have confidence in responding to other artists’ work. Participants should also have a foundation in the history of photography and art, in general, and be able to think about their own and others’ work within this context. Advanced critique groups are usually available by application only.
