ABOUT THE CLASS

On Assignment is an immersive online course designed to help photographers master the art of executing successful editorial assignments. Over twelve engaging 2-3 hour sessions, you’ll work closely with visual director Justin O’Neill who will provide expert guidance on every aspect of the editorial shoot process, including receiving an assignment, developing a concept, planning logistics, executing the assignment, and delivery of final images.

In this workshop, you’ll complete five mock editorial assignments, the first of which will be created by Justin. The following four assignments will be created by four other top photo editors from the publishing industry. Justin will walk you through each stage of the project, sharing strategies and insights to refine your process while encouraging you to bring your unique photographic voice to each assignment. Both Justin and the guest editors will review and critique your work in class, offering invaluable feedback to sharpen your skills and elevate your approach.

Scheduled guests include:

    • Natasha Lunn, Visual Director, Harper’s Bazaar

    • Florence Nash, Photo News Director, People Magazine

    • Sally Berman, Visual Director, Men’s Health

    • Jolie Ruben, Senior Photo Editor, Culture, The New York Times

Justin will also discuss the process of an editorial assignment from the point of view of a magazine visual director, which will help you to feel prepared and confident when working with editorial teams in the future. Additionally, he will share tips on how to highlight your work effectively online and on social media, as well as best practices for connecting with photo editors.

This course is a rare opportunity to connect with influential leaders in editorial publishing while gaining professional insights and practical experience. You’ll emerge from the workshop with all of the tools you’ll need to succeed as a professional editorial photographer, along with a standout portfolio featuring five high-level editorial shoots - an incredible asset for advancing your career.
