ABOUT THE CLASS

Do you find it challenging to articulate your thoughts about other people’s photographs? Is it even more difficult to confidently talk about your own work? Do you sometimes think you’re ‘missing something’ when you hear other people talking about photographs? If these questions resonate, this course is for you!

From the moment we look at the morning news to the last scroll through Instagram at the end of the day, photographs are everywhere. Photography is arguably the most universally accessible way in which information is transmitted between people, yet most of us never receive any formal education in photographic literacy. Think of this course as a primer in looking at and talking about photographs.

Through slideshows, photo-analysis exercises, brief writing assignments, and critique of student work, you will learn to see photographs in a new way, build a foundation for writing and talking about photographs with confidence, and broaden the visual vocabulary you bring to your own photography.

WHO THIS CLASS IS FOR

Look & See with Matthew Baum is perfect for beginning and intermediate photographers who want a deeper understanding of how photographs communicate thoughts, ideas, information, and emotions. If you’d like to develop greater confidence in talking and writing about photographs - both your own and those of other photographers - this course is for you.

PhotoPhlo Founder Matthew Baum is a photographer and educator based in the Taconic Mountains of northwestern Connecticut. He earned a BA in American history from Brown University, studied architecture at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts.
