ABOUT THE CLASS

The Core is an ongoing online seminar dedicated to photography project development and professional practices providing members with all of the tools necessary to achieve success as a fine-art photographer. The group meets monthly with Jason for two hours, combining lecture, group discussions, and personalized feedback of each photographer’s ongoing work. Topics covered in The Core include structured development of project ideas, designing, editing, and sequencing books and exhibitions, writing artist statements and residency/grant applications, fundraising, social media strategies, marketing, and more. Jason and the group will meet you where you are, no matter the stage of development of your project, as you advance your work in a rigorous and supportive environment with the goal of bringing it to a larger audience. Also included is a monthly 15-minute one-to-one meeting with Jason.

On the last Tuesday of the month Jason invites a guest artist, curator, or other photography-related professional to give a presentation about their area of expertise to all CORE members. The featured guest will also participate in a masterclass during which three photographers, chosen by Jason, will share their work with the guest and the rest of the group for feedback. Past visitors have included Cleveland Art Museum curator Barbara Tannenbaum, leading photo book consultant Melanie McWhorter, and acclaimed photographer Alejandro Cartagena. Additionally students will have access to an archive of videos from past sessions, featuring a wide array of talented and highly accomplished photographers and photography-related professionals.

HOW IT WORKS

The Core is ongoing and the curriculum does not repeat itself. Interested photographers can apply on a rolling basis for open spots or to join the waitlist for one of two sections, each limited to eight members. When space is available, successful applicants will be invited into group A, B, or C for six monthly meetings, to be used within seven months. Once a member has attended six sessions they will have the option of remaining in the group by signing up for another six-month package. Admission is by application only.
